内容記述 The object of this paper lies in analysing the changes of marital status in Japan from 1920 to 1975 from a general point of view, comparing them with those in Korea and Sweden, and making clear the socio-cultural factors of them. As for the trends of the said changes in Japan and Sweden, the standardized widowed rates of both sexes and the specific first marriage and remarriage rates of the male have gone down in both countries. But the specific divorce rates and the standardized married and divorced rates of the female have fallen in Japan, while they have risen in Sweden. On the contrary, standardized single rates of both sexes have risen in the former, while they have fallen in the latter. And the average first marriage age has become older in the former, but younger in the latter. Korean trends of the change of marital status have a striking resemblance to those of Japan, while by-year and by-cohort analyses give us the evidence that the Japanese trends make a contrast to those of Sweden. As for the marriage pattern, Sweden showed the European type up to 1940's, Korea the non-European type in 1930's, and Japan lies halfway between the said two countries. These types have changed after World War H. The traditional pattern, however, still remains to be found in these countries when observed from the single rates of those who are under the age of fourty-five. Japan had belonged to the frequency type while Sweden to the exceptional type as to the divorce pattern. But after World War H, the both countries have become of spontaneity type. The former has remarkably fallen while the latter risen in specific divorce rates. The following may be given as the socio-cultural factors of these changes in Japan: 1) The pattern of match choosing has changed from arranged match to free marriage. 2) The reform of educational system, the development of industrialization and the progress of urbanization have lowered specific marriage rates and raised the average first marriage age. 3) The abrogation of patriarchal family institution and the extension of self-consciousness in keeping along with the elevation of schooling have lowered the specific divorce rates. 4) But the traditional pattern of universal marriage and of frequency of divorce are still lingering in the Japanese life style.
